I am trying to create a community where users can create profiles based on their academic and sports experience...

There would be multiple profile types consisting of different fields based on the type of profile the user is selecting. I am interested in finding out what easyprofile can do to help me accomplish this task. How is it unique from jomsocial and how does it work well with jomsocial?

You can manage profiles type with conditions, with conditions you can show/hide fields and assign usergroups. There are many examples on this forum, here an example: https://www.easy-profile.com/support/only-username-email-password-at-registration.html#reply-8597

How is it unique from jomsocial and how does it work well with jomsocial?
Easy Profile extends Joomla user profile, so registration/edit pages are the same of Joomla (tabs are added by a javascript and custom fields by user plugin). Jomsocial have own registration page and own profile page. We recommend you to try with free version.
