I am having a few issues with the Registration form and I enclose a screen shot of an error produced when a new user tried to register with a reply saying the "activation email had been sent" but at the same time also one saying "the email was invalid or already in use....timeout-or-duplicate"

Hi,
I have just tried and works without double messages. Probably some cache/session problem. This can be due when you make login/logout with same browser in the same session.
Easy Profile extends Joomla user management (not replace), so registration and edit profile forms are managed by Joomla and extended by Easy Profile (with tabs,custom fields,....). Messages regarding activation and duplicated emails comes from Joomla.
