I want to us social connect to set up registration if the user wants. How do I go about that?

Hi,
in login page should appear automatically the buttons to login via social network.

In other parts of site you can use Social Button everywhere. If user is already registered then do a login, otherwise a registration.

Social Connect plugin use email address to check if user exist.
