After saving data in user details creen I receive
1) a confirmation that data was saved
2) an errror message (Error: Category not found)

After re-opening the profile I can see that the changes have not been saved.

You have not disabled K2 user profile from k2 options.

Try to disable K2 User profile from Administration->Components->K2->Options
