How to allow users to select groups to which they would like to subscribe upon user registration?

Now it is not possible,
but in the future I implement a method for assigning a Usergroup based on the value of a field.

Hey thats cool if you can let users select the group when registering and show group specific fields at registration...

I am looking for exactly that functionality

Can you let me know once you have it so I can buy the component?

Yes,
you can create a select(dropdown), checkbox or radio with various options.
for each option you can assign one or more usergroups with conditions.

Also, you can assign usergroups on SocialConnect registration (registration with social network - only for Pro)

But can the user select which group he belongs to when registering?
Also can we show only select group options to select when registering ? (Say under registered i have Student, Teacher, School... can these 3 be shown and slecetd and then the registration form follows accordingly? O

Yes,
Instead select, radio or checkbox field, you can create hidden field

Example
- Create hidden field avaible on registration with alias=usertype
- set conditions for usergroups and fields:
If this field is equal to 'student' show student fields and add to group student
.....

Now you can set default value from url, read here http://www.easy-profile.com/docs/27-set-default-value-in-registration-from-url.html

You can create a menu item or link in an article for each registration type.
