Maybe a missed a step, but I can't seem to save profile details from the front end. Saving from the admin side the details all save fine, but not the frontend (including the avatar).

Okay I found the problem - the front end edits don't save when using Firefox. I tried in Chrome and the updates worked fine. I can't seem to find any conflicts in Firebug so I'm not sure exactly what the problem is.

Hi,
we have found the problem:
in firefox password field is partially filled (see screenshot), this generate a error because password and confirm password do not match.

Why you not see any error message? I think that in your template missing code to show Joomla messages, you need to add in your template (index.php) this code:
<jdoc:include type="message" />

see Joomla docs at: https://docs.joomla.org/Display_error_messages_and_notices

Hi,
sorry confirm password is required by Joomla, Firefox fill password field even when username not match, so you need to clean password for your site.

Go into Firefox configurations->Security->Stored passwords and remove password for your site.
