I think it would be beneficial to have subgroups.

It would be possible to better arrange larger amounts of data.

1. Level will appear as tab in the registration
2. Level will appear as sub group inside that tab

I think that way it would be possible to have groups of fields aligned next to each other.

Sorry but this is much more complex.
Edit and Registration profile is managed from Joomla com_users, the tab is generated by our javascript.
You can use the delimiter field (text delimiter) to set a title for the following fields
