I have a field "Preferred Contact Method" with the options: Telephone, Text Messaging / Whatsapp and Email.

I have a custom field Contact Number and a core field email.

I have set conditions so that if Telephone or Text Message is selected the Contact Number field becomes visible, however the condition does not work for email, this is always shown on the user profile.

Is this because it is a core field? Do conditions not work with Core fields? How can I hide the email field if Email is not checked?

yes, it does not works because it is a core field. In joomla the email must be unique and present for any user.
