Hi,
You can do this with a simple query on Joomla #__users table

$db=JFactory->getDbo();

$query=$db->getQuery(true);

$query="SELECT count(id) FROM #__users"

$db->setQuery($query);

$count=$db->loadResult();


NOTE: this code is not supported and not tested
